Replacing Renewaire Filters

We frequently get asked how often should we replace the filters on Renewaire ERV units.  The quick answer is at least once a month on average.  However, there are many factors to consider, for example:  How often do you run your unit?  Is the outside air being brought in through an area that is dusty?  So what happens if you forget to replace your filter and you open the unit and the filter is clogged and so is the surface of the Renewaire ERV Core?  If this happens, be glad that you purchased an ERV from Renewaire, because the Renewaire ERV core is designed to have laminar airflow through the core, which means that no contaminants will deposit inside the ERV Core.  The solution is to grab a vacuum cleaner with a soft bristle brush tip and vacuum the outer surface of the core to allow airflow to pass through the Renewaire ERV Core.  At this point, the ERV Core may look stained, but that is just cosmetic.  The Renewaire ERV Cores are guaranteed for 10 years.

It is important to note that the Renewaire ERV Cores SHOULD NOT BE WASHED WITH WATER or any other liquid for that matter.  If you do this, then you run the risk of damaging the ERV Core and the warranty will be void.  Call us if this happens and we can sell you a new replacement core.

So, which filters fit your unit?  If you have a Renewaire EV90, EV130, EV200, EV300, BR70, BR130 or the new GR90 you have (2) options:

  • Part Number 990076: This is a 10 Pack of Filter Media.
  • Part Number 990447: This is a 3 Pack of Filter Media.

We recommend purchasing the Renewaire Filter 990076 just because you will end up spending less in freight.

If you still have questions or need filters for another Renewaire ERV unit, please give us a call 561-367-0320 !!!

  1. Does the orange side face in towards the center of the unit - or outward towards exterior? Thanks, Blaine
    • Hi Blaine, great question. The orange side of the filter must face towards the energy recovery core. The white part of the filter faces the "exterior" or duct openings. Best regards, Renzo
  2. Hello, Can anyone help me to find the model of erv unit ? I have the manual but it is indicated as ev70/ev130/ev200/ev300. I looked around the unit and couldn't fine the model number. Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.
  3. Question : we a RenewAire EV130 installed in 2004 . Our filter are soft green ( washable ?) Can we use the ones with orange on the one side white on other?
  4. @ Renzo Crippa can you comment on the benefits of a unitized ERV system (i.e. a unit per apartment for kitchen and toilet exhaust) versus a centralized system with risers? I'm curious about the benefits of a unitized system for a mid size apartment complex that is applying for passive house certification in the new york city area. I get the sense that centralized ERV systems, if balanced correctly, have a greater advantage due to simplicity of design. As long as the ductwork can be run properly, I don't see any drawbacks. In addition, you don't have to replace a filter on 100 apartments monthly. Looking forward to your input. Thank you. Tom
  5. I would like to buy a new core for our ev200 unit. It is 10 years old now and we are recently experiencing more allergen symptoms in our home.
    • Hi Mark: The replacement core for the EV200 is the L100 core and the price is $652 plus shipping. This can only be ordered over the phone and you must provide the unit model and serial number. Please call us at 561-367-0320 when you are ready. Best Regards, Renzo
  6. I have an EV-200. My core has what appears to be mold and stains on the surface. The house was built in 1999 and I assume this unite was installed during construction. I have owned the home for 3 years. Would you recommend purchasing a new core or is there a safe way to clean the core without doing damage? I have used the vacuum with a soft brush method but that doesn’t even begin to fix the problem. Thanks
    • Hi Bert, if the core has mold, then you need to replace it. That is an indication that the core got wet at some point. 8. Do the white and orange filters for the EV200 prevent mold from getting in the core? How can you tell if the core has mold or needs replacing? Do cores have a life expectancy?
    • Hi, the core should not grow mold under normal operating conditions. The orange filters are designed to keep the core clean so that dirt doesn't block the airflow through the core. If your core has mold, you need to replace it. The life expectancy of the core is more than 10 years if operating as designed and regular maintenance has been performed on the unit.
  9. 1. When our ev130 was installed they said the filter could be washed and reused. So that's what we've done. 2. We only got 1 filter and it was the top one of the 2 you show in video. 3. Finally, ours does NOT have the wires to secure the filters therefore my non-existent bottom filter would probably not stay in place.

  11. Three years ago (2018) we bought a home built in 2008, a home that was designed to be pretty airtight. Our house is 4,000 square feet. The house came with an EV130. I have a three questions: 1. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I RUN THE EV130?? The previous owners installed s simple mechanical timer (like you'd see for Christmas lights) that ran about 20 minutes every third hour. We all seem to get colds and sniffles more frequently in this house than in our old (and very drafty) house. 2. Is there a higher MIRV rating filter for our 2008 EV130? We currently use the orange filters that say they are MIRV 8 3. Do you recommend the furnace fan run constantly to circulate all the air in the house more often? Thanks
